Dumping Life…. One Thought at a Time….
As I walk in, I see employers that were not even on the list. Seems like they were there just to market their company or spread awareness. Recruiters were dressed in Polo shirt and seemed un professional. Most of the company representatives I talked to said “GO ONLINE” and apply for the job. What the heck is the point of a career fair if I am re-directed to the internet for submission of my resume? I am not interested in your company pen or paper cutter that is made in china…
I went to San Francisco City’s booth and handed the lady my application which I had already filled out at home and was waiting to turn it in. She takes the application, looks at it then hands it back to me telling me she is not collecting any applications from applicants. Once again, why the heck are you in a career fair if you can’t take applications and resumes? Who is putting a gun to your head? All she had on her table were print out of city jobs that can also be viewed online.
Do the recruiters really think that a job applicant is at their table to find out if the company’s stock should be bought or sold? If I need information about the company, I can go online and do my research. If I am at a company’s booth, I want to know if they have a job available for people with accounting majors, what are the requirements and if resumes are being accepted. That’s It!
Obviously after glancing at my resume if they see fit, they can take me to a side and take an informal interview. That is not something I will be deciding but I am obviously ready for it. I saw students forcing recruiters to take the resumes and the recruiters being hesitant to take the resumes and give out their business cards. Seriously, it was JOKE!

As a fellow SF State student, I am not surprised by this type of behavior. I bet most of the employers there were just there to “promote” their brand, thank god I didnt spend my afternoon there. I am also an accounting major, if you are looking for accounting related jobs, perhaps you can look in to ASO or BAP on campus.

Thanks for the info Gilbert. I am not currently enrolled at sfsu as I am taking a semester off to get few things in order. I will be attending SFSU in fall and then will definitly join ASO. I was a member of ASO last fall and I think it is a very well managed student run organization.

In what seems to be an all digital world now, I’m not surprised you were told to ‘go online’. However this kind of fair does show which companies really are the cut above - anyone who can take care of you when you just want to apply, will take care of you as an employee.
The downside to fair is it does tend to be all PR and Marketing - none of the people there have hiring power, and very few are on top of what jobs are on offer. (It’s often out-sources on a per-job basis!).
I just go for the free pens…

Zahid, from your comment it appears that many business groups really just used this fair as an excuse to meet up and coming, bright university students who are deemed to be the second or third largest consumer group with disposable income.
It’s a shame, however, that some of them did not make more of an effort to at least PRETEND to take in resumes and get those resumes to the appropriate departments within their companies.
I would suggest as students that you all put a list of the most blatant offenders up in a facebook wall of shame group.
Then ask those in the group to have decision makers at the fair next year or their wall of shame shall become even more prominent, lol.
