Individual Devotion and Group Rituals in Islam

5 Jan 2007 In: Islam, Research Papers

The religion of Islam is based on the very foundations of love, respect, devotion and happiness. Islam stresses strong connections in between fellow human beings, between the body and soul, and most important of all, the bond between man and his creator, the Almighty God. My aim is to analyze, from the humanities perspective, how different group rituals of the Islamic faith portray the individual devotion of Muslims to their religion and God. In this paper, I will use two group ritual representations of the Islamic culture to demonstrate how the concept of worship explains the individual devotion of Muslims. I will use the Hajj to Mecca and the Salah specifically to make my point.

The acts of worships are numerous in Islam and their expression ranges from daily prayers to giving out charity. Whatever the case maybe, it requires that all acts be done out of sincerity, love and devotion. Islam is defined as the “submission” to one God, and the revelations revealed to Muhammad outlined a means of praising one God. The visions included verses such as,

The understanding that only through devotion to one and only one God and through righteous observance of the revealed law could people attain salvation in the after- life. (Esposito, P.7)

These laws include practices of regular prayer, almsgiving and charitable treatment of the poor, modesty with the opposite sex, and the rejection of idols and false Gods. The religious group rituals in Islam are the perfect way for a Muslim to achieve the happiness of God, to attain personal satisfaction and to also gain rewards for both the life and hereafter.

Create your own Google search typo

5 Jan 2007 In: Funny, Internet

This is funny and it also tells you that some people have lot of free time on their hands. There is a website called Gooogie.co.uk that allows you to create your own search results. The thing is, it won’t show you any search results but just tell you “Your search - SEARCH TERM - did not match any documents” It’s a good prank tool.

I tried it and it works very well. Check out my example.

Painful Eye Infection

29 Dec 2006 In: Personal Life

I was really looking forward to last week because I knew I would have time to blog a lot but then who knew I would get an eye infection out of no where. I slept with my contacts on and the nap I took was 10 hours long. It honestly screwed up my cornea as oxygen couldn’t pass through. My left eye is not the better of the two eyes and so it was the only one affected. Two painful days at home and then I decided I had enough, especially after looking online under contact lenses infections I found that I might have Corneal Ulcer and it could lead to blindness….

I went to the ER and after around 6-7 hours back and forth between different physician assistants, I was seen by someone who relieved me of my misery… I just realized these poor doctors have to do so much paper work that they look more like clerks and data entry operators then doctors. I mean seriously, if the whole health care business didn’t involve so much paper work and documentation, lives could really be saved and people could be treated without the wait that’s involved… it feels like sitting at DMV.

And yeah, I didn’t really have Corneal Ulcer, it was not even an infection according to the doctor, it was basically clogged veins inside the cornea because of no oxygen. I feel much better now.

Totally Revamped JokesKafe

24 Dec 2006 In: My Websites

JokesKafe is one of the websites that I was running but not paying that much attention to. But then I decided that why not turn the website into a blog style jokes archive. So I did that, using Wordpress of course and transferred all the jokes from the old database to the new one.

JokesKafe now has more categories and I am updating it daily with atleast 2-3 new jokes. I have also created this new concept of “Sponsor a Joke”. You can sponsor a joke by buying jokes, after every joke there will be a textual advertisement saying “Joke Sponsore by ABC Website”. I think this can prove to be really effective as it is non intrusive and once you read the joke, you can visit the sponor. From a webmaster’s point of view, its a valuable link back. You don’t get on top of google by making a website, you get a top ranking on google if lots of websites link to you. This is an entire different topic and maybe I will cover some other day.

I have one sponsor so far who bought 20 jokes. So I am happy its a good start.
